WinNest

Release notes

What's new in each version of WinNest.

  1. WinNest 0.2.2

More robust installations, room on your disk, and clearer messages.

    • Free up space used by downloads. Settings → Storage and QEMU shows how much the downloaded system images take and frees the ones no virtual machine uses. Images still in use and unfinished downloads that a VM will continue are kept.
    • Installations finish more reliably. An installer that restarts at the end, instead of powering off, now counts as finished once it has written a system to the disk. If WinNest cannot record a finished installation (for example because another program has the file open), it records it the next time the VM starts instead of installing again. Mark as installed is also offered for an installation that was interrupted after the installer ran.
    • A VM that WinNest paused because the PC's disk is almost full says why, in the library and in its window, with a Resume button, also during an installation. It no longer pauses again every few seconds right after you resume it with little space left.
    • After the PC sleeps or hibernates, the clock of a running VM with the guest agent is set right again.
    • When creating a VM, a folder path that is too long for Windows is refused before anything is created, and a folder inside OneDrive shows a warning: OneDrive would sync the VM's disk, tens of GB that change all the time.
    • If a guest ignores Shut down for a minute, WinNest says so, so you can use Force stop.
    • Unattended Windows installations log on automatically only once (the documented fix for a Windows known issue that logged on twice).
    • WinNest starts faster with many VMs, and a VM that does not answer no longer delays the others.
    • Starting a VM while its disks are being changed (snapshot, resize) says it is busy instead of failing; the disk size cannot be changed while a VM is still downloading or preparing.
    • The message about port forwards that could not be set up (another program uses the port) lists every such port, and no longer gets mixed up with the reason a VM was paused.
    • A VM whose folder cannot be read (unplugged drive, moved folder) only offers to remove it from the library. A VM whose download was interrupted in WinNest 0.2.0 explains how to recreate it.
    • Also fixed: automatic snapshot names and more engine messages are in Spanish when the UI is; the notification-area menu follows a language change at once; a VM window closes only after cancelling or deleting really worked; Cancel in the Clone dialog is disabled while cloning; "Send files" explains when the guest agent is not running instead of being greyed out; the hypervisor banner shows only the instructions that apply; and a failed installation shows its reason in the VM window.
  2. WinNest 0.2.1

Installations that cannot get stuck, and many fixes found by reviewing what can go wrong on customers' PCs.

    • Interrupted installations continue. Closing WinNest, restarting the PC or stopping the VM in the middle of an installation no longer leaves it "Waiting to install…" forever: it shows what happened and a Continue installation button. A download continues where it stopped, and an unattended installer starts again from the beginning.
    • What a new VM still has to download or prepare is saved with it, so it resumes after a restart. A VM created without "Start after creating" shows Start installation, and a failed preparation shows its error with Retry. Cancel works for any unfinished installation.
    • Mark as installed, for an unattended installation that finished without WinNest noticing. An installer now has to power off to count as finished: a reboot (or a restart or shutdown you asked for) never marks a half-done installation as installed.
    • Downloads retry network errors and resume, two VMs downloading the same image no longer damage it, a damaged cached image is downloaded again, and free space is checked first. Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora downloads use the newest point release, so they keep working when a new one ships.
    • Closing the main window while a VM downloads keeps WinNest in the notification area.
    • Paths with accents work (for example C:\Users\José or a VM named “Máquina”): QEMU for Windows cannot open them, so WinNest now gives it plain paths.
    • Data safety. Snapshots, disk resizing and clones never touch a disk that a running VM uses. When the PC's disk is almost full, the VM is paused with an explanation instead of failing to write. When Windows shuts down, restarts or signs out, running VMs close their disks cleanly. The PC does not go to sleep during an unattended installation.
    • Updating or uninstalling WinNest works while VMs or AI clients are running, and "Delete app data" also removes WinNest's own data (never your virtual machines). After an update, a VM that was already running asks to be restarted to finish updating.
    • Messages from the engine, the notification-area menu and the New VM gallery are in Spanish when the UI is.
    • Also fixed: a VM whose files cannot be deleted stays listed (and the window shows why); a VM on an unplugged drive is listed as unavailable instead of disappearing; a port forward on a port another program uses no longer stops the VM from starting; "Send files" explains when the guest agent is not running; the hypervisor banner explains when the hypervisor is switched off; PCs with an ARM processor are told that VMs cannot run; QEMU is found where its installer put it; imported VM folders no longer keep paths to files of the PC they came from; and WinNest can no longer stop an unrelated process that reused the id of a VM's old process.
  3. WinNest 0.2.0

    • WinNest is now commercial software. It stays free to download and, for now, has no trial limits. A license (sold through Polar) is activated in Settings → License: one PC per seat, yours forever, with one year of updates.
    • Website (website/): home, pricing, download, release notes, privacy policy, license agreement and legal notice, in English and Spanish.
    • The installer shows the End User License Agreement.
    • About links to the website and the public issue tracker.
    • pnpm dev (and pnpm tauri dev) stops a Vite dev server left behind by an earlier run that still holds port 1420, and explains who holds the port otherwise.
    • License changed from MIT to proprietary (see LICENSE and legal/eula.en.txt).
  4. WinNest 0.1.0

    First release.

    • Windows and Linux virtual machines on Windows 10/11 (including Home) with QEMU + WHPX.
    • VM library, New VM gallery with verified downloads (Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Alpine) and user-supplied ISOs (Windows 11), disk image import (VMDK, VDI, VHD, VHDX, QCOW2, raw).
    • Unattended installs for Windows 11, Ubuntu and Fedora.
    • VM window with noVNC, clipboard, automatic resolution, drag & drop file upload.
    • Live and automatic snapshots (on start, before AI agents act), restore, delete.
    • Live port forwarding, live disk growth, per-VM sound and microphone settings.
    • MCP server with 24 tools and one-click registration in Claude Code, Codex, Gemini CLI, Grok Build, Claude Desktop, Cursor and VS Code.
    • One host process per VM: VMs survive an app crash and the app reconnects to them.
    • English and Spanish UI.
